Custom Neon Sign Production Time: How Long Will it Take?
Thinking about investing in a custom neon or LED sign for your business? One of the most common questions we hear is, “How long does it take to make a custom neon sign?”
At Port City Signs, we understand that timing matters. Whether you’re planning a grand opening or updating your storefront, here’s what you can expect when it comes to creating your custom sign, from concept to installation.
While many people still say “neon,” most modern illuminated signs are made with LED technology. Neon has nostalgic appeal, but LED is now the industry standard thanks to its energy efficiency, longevity, low maintenance, and enhanced safety!
Average Production Timeline
On average, the production timeline for a custom LED sign is about six weeks, from the moment you approve the final design to when it’s ready to install. However, one key factor often extends this timeline: permitting.
Permitting requirements vary by municipality, and the approval process can sometimes add extra weeks. When you factor in permitting, most projects are completed within 8–10 weeks.

Does Size or Complexity Matter?
In short, yes. The size and complexity of your sign can affect the production time.
Simple shapes like circles, boxes, or cabinet signs with acrylic faces generally move through our shop more quickly. More detailed designs like intricate lettering, custom shapes, or multiple components that need fabrication and painting naturally require a bit more time to build to our high standards.
How Artwork Approval Impacts the Schedule
One of the biggest influences on your timeline is how quickly the final artwork is approved.
We can’t submit for permits until you’ve signed off on the final design. Likewise, we don’t begin production until the permit is in hand. This helps us avoid surprises if the municipality requires design changes.
If there are multiple rounds of revisions or delayed approvals, the timeline will shift accordingly. Fast, clear communication helps keep everything on track!

Rush Orders: Is It Possible?
Because every sign is handcrafted to meet local codes and your exact specifications, we don’t typically offer “rush” production for LED signs.
However, if you’re on a tight deadline, we’ll work closely with you to find solutions, such as providing temporary signage like “Coming Soon” banners to bridge the gap until your permanent sign is ready.
Common Causes of Delays
While we keep a large stock of the materials we need, from LEDs and power supplies to aluminum and acrylic, there are still a few factors that can affect your schedule:
- Permitting: Every municipality has its own process, and response times can vary.
- Site readiness: Sometimes the sign is ready before the building is. Delays in electrical work, wall preparation, or exterior painting can push back installation.
- Weather: Severe weather can occasionally impact outdoor installations. We closely monitor forecasts and stay in touch with you to adjust schedules when needed.
The good news? We handle most fabrication and painting in-house, giving us greater control over your timeline than ever before.
What to Expect on Installation Day
Most signs are installed in a single day, thanks to the prep work we do ahead of time. We build as much as possible in our shop to minimize the time needed on-site.
Larger or more complex projects, or multiple signs for one location, may require two days or more for installation. We’ll coordinate closely with you to ensure minimal disruption to your business.
